In perpetuation of capacity building at the Association of Liberian Immigrants in Kitchener Environs, an online Digital Literacy workshop was held to enlighten members of the ALIKE community about the framework of digital literacy. The framework includes research and information, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, creativity and innovation and digital citizenship. The world has changed over the past 20years. In recent years digital technology has revolutionized almost every aspect of people’s lives. Examples of digital technology include social media, online games, multimedia, and mobile phones.

We live in a digital world; so, being digitally literate is so important. We can now reach almost everything with just a click but is it an advantage or disadvantage? Are technologies making our lives more comfortable or are they complicating our lives instead? For the most part, the World Wide Web was founded by Tim Berners-Lee with the intent to serve humanity, but the reality is data security is a great concern nowadays in the digitized world.

Digital technology means that a huge amount of information (text, images, and videos) is collected and stored. This stored information may be of individuals or organization which is vulnerable to theft. This data can go into the hands of criminals, terrorist, foreign enemies, etc. as all the electronic equipment are connected through the internet all around the world. Social isolation is growing as face-to-face communication is rare these days with the development of digital technology. Digital technology makes our lives comfortable; it enables private study, develops computer skills, and increases learner engagement. Without digital technology, we will not be engaging in this online workshop right now.
